Liverpool new kit announcement

This week Liverpool revealed their new kit for next season, with a throwback to their kits of the 60s and 70s, specifically the 1973-74 season which was Bill Shankly’s final year in charge, 50 years ago. They have backed up the nostalgic kit design with a launch video and photo shoot with a very retro feel. Liverpool fans will be hoping they get back to the Liverpool of old next season.

Cheltenham Festival’s new look

Cheltenham Festival, the biggest horse racing event in the jumps calendar, have shared their new look this month and following on from the Jockey Club’s brand refresh - it does not disappoint. The primary logo itself is modern and elegant whilst still holding its nod to the history behind it, with a beautifully bespoke illustration at the forefront.

If you click through to the case study on their website they have a short video that encapsulates the adrenaline and feelings behind the festival. Through kinetic typography, clever animation and a brilliant choice of music - the video is something really magnificent.

NFL Draft 2023

The eyes of the world were firmly fixated on the 2023 NFL draft last month, with some of the biggest teams fighting over some of the hottest prospects the sport has to offer.

None more so than Ohio States’ CJ Stroud who became Houston Texans’ new franchise quarterback at the age of 21. Leading up to the draft, the ESPN created a bespoke kit swap animation that fused a variety of NFL team kits to be used as a social content piece.

The creative takes the two disciplines of video and animation to a whole new level, with the vibrant and precise application of kit colours to build a collage. You can’t help but just sit back and admire this sporting masterpiece.

Golden State Warriors Arena Animations

American creative studio HUE+CRY developed a custom motion package for Rakuten's brand, which is displayed around the Golden State Warriors' arena, Chase Center.

The animations are eye-catching and expressive. I don't think many sporting stadiums or arenas have well-thought-out, smooth animations like this. I really enjoy the smooth transition in typography between different weights. I also like the cohesive connection between each element, such as the transitions between the imagery and text.

Lettering Series LXVIII

I’ve always loved the creativity and freedom behind designing logos and am constantly scrolling through social media to trigger ideas and gather inspiration. I discovered this unique logo series presenting rebranded logos from some of the largest and well-known franchises around the world.

This series focuses on the power of typography and the use of colour contrast to create new and modern logos whilst utilising a playful tone. Each design differentiates in shape, colours and style, however they all share the same vibrant and eye-catching characteristics; which is why I admire this series so much.

Youtube thumbnails

In recent years, YouTube has become a highly competitive platform, with views and clicks becoming the main focus for creators. One of the many ways creators have been able to increase traffic towards their videos is by producing inviting and captivating thumbnails. The idea behind a thumbnail is to let your audience view a quick snapshot of your video. By using specific techniques, YouTubers have been able to successfully grab attention by utilising graphic design.

The video below is a great example of how a narrative is communicated through graphic design. The use of a 50/50 layout alongside star icons instantly illustrates the idea of two extremes which will entice the user to click onto the video. YouTube thumbnails in general are a great way to learn how to showcase a narrative through graphic design and this has been something I've been looking to implement in my work recently.
