BetMGM wanted a stunt that would cut through a crowded sports calendar, drive coverage around their Premier League Darts partnership and generate versatile content across TV, print, online, social and owned channels. As a specialist in regulated sports environments, Square in the Air understood how to maximise creative impact while navigating the operational and compliance demands of a large-scale public activation.
A giant golden dart, arriving by river into Newcastle city centre.
Working with experience agency onepointfive, Square in the Air coordinated marine permissions with NE1 Marina and Port of Tyne, secured council approvals with Newcastle City Council, and arranged a branded vessel to carry a replica golden dart along the River Tyne, framed by the Tyne and Gateshead Millennium Bridges.
On land, a bespoke three-metre BetMGM-branded dartboard base anchored the installation. The golden dart mounted perpendicular, bold, three-dimensional, unmissable. All eight Premier League Darts players positioned alongside for the hero shot.
On the day, the boat timed its river journey to sync with media teams on the Quayside, the dart "arriving" before being unveiled for photocalls and fan interaction.
40+ pieces of online coverage. BBC Look North and Sky Sports both featured the activation. The Chronicle ran SITA's imagery in print. Wales Online and the Daily Express used captured video from the event. Michael van Gerwen and Luke Humphries amplified the stunt 10 fold across socials.
A single activation that gave BetMGM clear ownership of Premier League Darts in Newcastle, and a blueprint for future season launches.
